Two reasons why I chose to travel to the other side of the world to complete my divemaster and Open Water Instructor course with Oceans Unlimited.
One I wanted a paradise setting to be mui tranqulio and learn Spanish ( mui tranqulio means very relaxed, and that was the only words in spanish which i can write on the world wide web without hetting yelled at that i knew before i left home) and two, by reading reviews and looking around other dive centers across Central America Oceans Unlimited offered the package which I thought was the best value, not only cheap but also included specialist instructor training for FREE!!! I said it free, that stuff is not cheap and vital if you really want to succeed as a Dive Instructor.
When I arrived at the start of March, I was greeted by Course Director Georgia, the owner Bob and some of the other staff, straight away I felt this is going to be a great next 10 weeks.
Divemaster training started the next day and went for 10weeks under the watchful eye of the hulk (JT), seriously staff instructor JT is huge!! a giant among men but he also had a heart of gold, under his guidance I learnt the meaning of hardwork, the in’s and outs of running a dive shop, and how to cut piƱa (means pinapple a new word that i learnt in spanish) into perfect hexagons, trust me it is harder than it sounds.
Then I worked for a few weeks as a Divemaster for Oceans Unlimited and I loved it. Diving everyday for your job
Life couldn’t get much better than this.
Next came the IDC and IE, I’m not going to lie this is stressful and full on time, emotions run high and stress releases will definitely be used (mine was surfing). But Georgia is a first grade instructor I really mean it by the end of the course I knew that I had everything that I needed to pass the exams, And I did whoooo!!!
Over my time here 3 other divemaster interns and 6 open water instructor candidates that completed the same journey as me. These awesome people Along with everyone that worked at Oceans unlimited can be said became some of my truest friends that I will always miss. This is probably my favourite thing about my time at oceans unlimited, it is home to so many damn awesome people.
Overall I had a brilliant time at Oceans Unlimited, it was bang for its buck, made some great everlasting friends and even found a piece of paradise which I could learn a little Spanish
