The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a 10 day program consisting of academic, confined and open water training to prepare you to teach scuba diving. We begin with a welcome session including staff and candidate introductions, orientation and a review session of dive theory. In the next few days we will complete training in classroom presentations as well as confined water and open water training in the tropical waters of Costa Rica.

General course information:

  • Prerequisites: PADI Divemaster (or qualifying certification from another training organization), 18 years old and been a certified diver for at least 6 months. Must have a current medical approval for diving.
  • Minimum Number of Logged Dives: 60 dives to begin the course, 100 dives to take the Instructor Exam - with experience in deep, night and navigation.
  • Duration: 10 days.

  • PADI Instructor Development (IDC) Crew Pack (buy pack reduced price or components can be purchased individually)

    Instructor Manual – paper or CD-rom version. If using the CD-rom version, you must bring the disc and a laptop to use in class.

Learn the operations of a PADI Dive Center in Costa Rica Oceans Unlimited Dive Leadership Program
Once you are certified as a PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or Instructor, you can have the opportunity to take part in our 2 weeks Dive Leadership Program.
This gives you the opportunity to gain more hands on experience in a PADI Five Star IDC Dive Center.

Working as part of our team of Dive Professionals you can gain real hands on experience in areas such as dive center logistics like tank filling and equipment maintenance, PADI Programs, supervising and assisting certified divers and dive crew skills. 

This program does not have a cost, though only serious candidates will have the opportunity to take part. This is a fantastic preparation if you are planning on taking the Instructor Development Course.

Already an Assistant Instructor or an Instructor from another agency?

Take the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) portion of the IDC. This is the last 5 days of the IDC Program and takes an Assistant Instructor (or crossover an Instructor from another agency) to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor level and prepares them for the Instructor Examination.


General course information:

  • Prerequisites: PADI Assistant Instructor or current instructor with another training agency for at least 6 months. 18 years old and been a certified diver for at least 6 months. Must have a current medical approval for diving.
  • Minimum Number of Logged Dives: 100 with experience in deep, night and navigation.
  • Duration: 5 days
